This party celebrated LA’s selection as the host city of the 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games. For this initial “save the date” design, I used three main intentions that drove my design decisions: 1) celebrate LA’s diverse landscape – a thriving city with the backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains 2) tease the undisclosed location of the party, an exclusive rooftop in downtown LA. 3) use colors from LA2028’s vibrant branding, and a sunset to nod to LA 2028’s slogan, “follow the sun.” To execute on this vision, I found multiple reference photos of downtown LA and paid a visit to the view point during golden hour. I illustrated the scene by hand, and paid special attention to the dark colors of the buildings and how shadows would reflect on the skyline during the final hours of the sunset.

The formal invite that followed now revealed the location to be the intercontinental hotel’s Skydeck, so I put an orb of light coming from that very rooftop in the skyline. Both the save the date and formal invitation were delivered via email.

I also designed other aspects of the event utilizing this same branding: day-of signage, the photo booth backdrop, a give-away commemorative pin and packaging design for its pin holder, and follow up thank you emails.
